February's birthstone is an amethyst. Most well known for its many shades of purple, it may also have secondary colors of red or blue. Traditionally, the darker the purple, the more valuable it is. Amethyst can be found all over the world and can be cut in a variety styles ranging from traditional cuts to more artsy, intricate carvings. Amethyst's name comes from the Greek word "amethystos" which means "not intoxicated". In the ancient Greek and Roman mythology, amethysts were believed to protect the wearer from drunkenness. In the Middle Ages, amethysts were a symbol of royalty with their purple color and a number of European royal jewels featured amethysts.
